Yogi Bhajan, Master of Kundalini Yoga and White Tantric Yoga, came to the West in 1968. Very early, he established 3HO - the Healthy Happy Holy Organization to promote health consciousness. He noticed right away the 60's drug culture and their alienation from the rest of society. Knowing a system that would help, he was compelled to lift up their consciousness.
He began teaching Kundalini Yoga at colleges and YMCA's and became very popular with his unconventional teaching strategies and overpowering presence. However, as he came to the West, he brought with him a vast system of yogic technology that was not openly taught or practiced unless otherwise shown worthiness. He went against the centuries old tradition and held a mission that these techniques would be spread across the world for all for the science of Kundalini Yoga is the science of the Human Being.
"I haven't come to gain students, I came to create teachers," is a very common quote of Yogi Bhajan. He held a bigger picture and was well before his time in regards to the paradigm we live in. He thought generations down the line and believed this system is useful at a bigger scale. Thus, those who were called to take his class quickly became teachers and were sent around the world to make ashrams and teach.
Kundalini Yoga wasn't the only aspect of health consciousness he brought from India. Through his 35 years of teaching in the West and around the world, he understood that more than just yoga was necessary for his mission. He understood the times were changing and that the consciousness of the human needed to be supported with more than exercises- but a dynamic change of lifestyle. He created his own concept- Humanology, the science of the excelled human being, living the householder lifestyle. Within its broad range of yogic technology of the human spirit are teachings of relationships, diet, prosperity, business strategy, service, community, and so much more. This desire to help progress the consciousness of the spiritual warrior is what made Yogi Bhajan such a dynamic teacher for all these years.
Yogi Bhajan left his physical body October 6th, 2004 but lives ever gracefully through the teachings. He taught not to love him but to love his teachings, for the teachings would out live him. We so honor them and tune in with the mantra Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo each class to invoke his subtle body and hold the presence for each class. This tunes us into the Golden Chain, the chain that links us straight to the source of the teachings of Yogi Bhajan's teacher, Guru Ram Das. This allows us as teachers to hold the space for the teachings to teach through. This is the magical dynamic of Kundalini Yoga, as this yoga cannot be taught by the teacher. Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo, is our link to spiritual growth, spiritual truth, and spiritual teachings. |
